You might be surprised to know that an average American relocates four times during his or her career. More surprising is the fact that Employee Relations Council ranks ‘moving’ as a third most stressful event in life behind death and divorce.

According to Holmes and Rahe stress scale, moving is one of the 43 stressful events that is associated with long term mental problems and distress. This scale assigns 25 points to ‘change in living condition, 20 points each to ‘change in residence’ and ‘change in school’ and 18 points to ‘change in social habits’ that occurs due to relocation.

Moving a house is stressful job; no matter with whom you are moving. Letting go of your place, friends and memories is a big deal.

With my experience in relocation, I listed down few points that will help you have a hassle free moving.

  • Preparation is the key. One of the most important things to be considered before relocation is to be ready for the change.  If you have kids make them aware that they are moving to another location and changing schools so that the change won’t disturb them too much. A study shows that moving a house is more stressful for children than adults.
  • Garnish relationship with the ones you are leaving. Invite your close friends and neighbors for a dinner and celebrate like never before. After all, moving is not the end of your world.
  • If you are planning to pack on the 11th hour, get ready for a bad day. I suggest you to start packing as early as possible. It is the best technique to reduce the stress of relocation. You should start packing and giving things away as soon as you find a new place to live. Start collecting boxes and pack slowly.
  • Know exactly what you need and what you don’t need. Do not pack stuffs which you do not need. If you can adjust you stuffs in your car or if you have a truck, it’s good and fine. But, if you don’t, immediately call a mover.
